Gimbaled INS Development

SITUATION:  Boeing had been awarded a Technical Maturity and Risk Reduction (TMRR) contract for their Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) program and the client was hired to provide engineering support to the program.  As a subcontractor to the client, engineering support for TMRR was provided on developing Boeing's concept for a highly accurate inertial navigation system (INS) by bringing it from a technical readiness level (TRL) of 4 to 6.

TASK:  Develop the INS gimbal control algorithms and interface control documentation to allow for build and test of an INS product.

ACTIONS:   Models of gimbal motors, resolvers, and gimbal dynamics were mathematically generated and implemented into a Matlab/Simulink simulation. A feedback linearizing control algorithm was developed and prototyped in a Matlab/Simulink simulation.   The models and control algorithms were placed into a C/C++ simulation and compared with Matlab/Simulation results for performance validation.

RESULT:  The control algorithms were implemented in a laboratory environment in preparation to demonstrate improvement of the INS product TRL.
